Anemia remains a significant public health concern in India, particularly among women and children. According to the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), approximately 53% of children under five and 57% of women of reproductive age suffer from anemia. This condition can lead to severe health complications, including impaired cognitive development, weakened immune systems, and increased maternal and child mortality rates. Notably, the high prevalence of anemia in nearby regions, such as Chandigarh (60.3%), Punjab (58.7%), Himachal Pradesh (53%), and Haryana (60.4%), underscores the importance of such initiatives. By targeting these areas, we were able to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by anemia.
Our Objective
The objective of this initiative was to provide support and awareness to women and children affected by anemia through a comprehensive screening camp. By partnering with The Salesian Society of Don Bosco Kauli, Adishrihaan Foundation aimed to:
1. Provide immediate healthcare support to those in need
2. Raise awareness about anemia prevention and management
3. Offer long-term assistance through follow-up care and counseling
Why Specific NGO
The Salesian Society of Don Bosco Kauli was chosen as our partner due to its renowned work in women and child welfare. Located in Mohali, the organization has a strong presence in the community and a proven track record of delivering essential services to vulnerable populations.
What We Planned
We planned a comprehensive anemia screening camp, which included:
Why Specific Location
The an.emia screening camp was held at Jagatpura Mohalla in Mohali district, Punjab.
The lack of facilities, limited awareness, and low literacy rates in certain areas can exacerbate health issues like anemia. In such contexts:
Limited access to healthcare facilities and resources can hinder diagnosis and treatment.
Lack of awareness about anemia, its causes, and its consequences can prevent individuals from seeking medical help.
Low literacy rates can make it challenging for people to understand health information and make informed decisions about their well-being.
Initiatives like the anemia screening camp in Mohali aim to address these challenges by providing:
Access to healthcare services and screenings
Awareness and education about anemia prevention and management
Support and resources for individuals affected by anemia
By targeting these areas, the initiative can help improve health outcomes and empower the community to take control of their well-being.
How It Was Executed
The camp was executed through a collaborative effort between Adishrihaan Foundation and The Salesian Society of Don Bosco Kauli. Our team worked closely with the NGO to identify beneficiaries, conduct screenings, and distribute medicines. Shrihaan, our young ambassador, personally handed over medicines to the beneficiaries, including babies, bringing smiles and joy to their faces.
The comprehensive setup included medical professionals (doctors and lab technicians), nursing staff, drivers, GDS students, support staff, and a coordinator. The budget allocation covered various expenses, including venue setup, logistics, refreshments, medical supplies (tonics, vitamins, and basic medicines), and operational costs
What Was the Impact
The vulnerability quotient is high among women and children due to factors like inadequate nutrition, poor healthcare access, and socio-economic disparities .The initiative had a significant impact on the community, with over 435 women and children benefiting from the screenings and healthcare support. The distribution of medicines brought joy and relief to those in need, and the awareness sessions empowered the community to take control of their health.
What’s the Way Forward
This partnership has laid the foundation for future collaborations and initiatives aimed at promoting health and well-being among women and children. Adishrihaan Foundation and The Salesian Society of Don Bosco Kauli plan to continue working together to address critical needs and promote overall well-being in the community, with a focus on sustainable and long-term solutions.
